Glossary of Terms - Page 3 POP Server A POP server (acronym for Post Office Protocol), stores users' incoming e-mail traffic until it is downloaded to the user's own computer. Protocol A protocol is an agreed set of rules that two computers use to communicate with each other. Search Engine A search engine, e.g. Google, is software that allows the user to search across indexes and databases by typing keywords into a blank search field. Results are published as a list and the user can then open whichever of the suggested matches that he feels appropriate. Server A server is exactly that - a computer that serves other network computers by handling their requests for data, file transfers, e-mail etc. SMTP Acronym for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, SMTP is a protocol used for routing e-mail via the Internet SPAM Unwanted, unsolicited data, advertisements and commercial trivia sent to mass recipients via e-mail. Spam filters are an excellent way of filtering out unwanted spam. TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, (TCP/IP), is the language governing communications between all computers on the Internet. It defines how packets of data are transmitted across multiple networks, with built in error checking. Uploading The opposite of downloading, uploading means transferring data from your computer to another one. URL Acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. A website URL is its address on the world wide web. User Name The name by which you and your mailbox are identified on line. Same as Login Name. Web Page A web page is an HTML document which when taken together with related web pages, forms a web site. Website A website is the collection of linked web pages that are held on a designated server, (which may also host a number of other websites. World Wide Web Originally created at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, as a pathway for sharing scientific data instantly across the globe at modest cost, the world wide web is most easily thought of as an inter-connected myriad assembly of data and multimedia that can be accessed by anyone connected to the system. © Internet Traders Ltd 2008 |
